APARRI 2024 General Information

The closest airports are Oakland International Airport (14 miles away) and San Francisco International Airport (25 miles away). Both airports are publicly accessible to UC Berkeley by BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). The closest BART station is Downtown Berkeley, which is a 23-minute walk to Unit 2, the dorms and conference location. You can find more information about transit in and around Berkeley, including bus line information, here.

If you would like to coordinate a ride to or from the airport with another conference participant, please add your name to this list and arrange your own rides. Please note that this list is public.

Conference participants may choose to stay in the Unit 2 Towle Mini-Suites at 2650 Haste Street or the Graduate Berkeley Hotel at 2600 Durant Avenue. Details and registration information are here.

Unit 2 guests may check in at the Unit 2 Front Desk starting at 12 pm until 11 pm on June 11. Information for check in after 11 pm is available on the door of the front desk. Check-out is 11 am on June 14. In addition to bedding, Unit 2 guests will be provided with two towels, a face cloth, and a bar of soap. Breakfast is included for Unit 2 guests. For more information on Unit #2, please see here.

A 24-hour overnight parking pass is available at the Underhill Lot ONLY for those who pre-purchased overnight parking at registration. You will get the pass when you check in to Unit 2. You must display the pass on your car dashboard.

If you did not purchase an overnight parking pass, local street parking is free and available from 6 pm – 9 am.

Daily parking is available at the Telegraph Channing Lot at 2450 Durant Avenue and the Underhill Lot at 2645 Haste St.
Berkeley summer’s can be foggy, cool, and damp, especially in the late afternoon and evening. Please bring appropriate clothing. Our evening dinner reception on June 11 will be outside. Feel free to dress casually or as you would at an academic conference. Please also bring footwear suitable for walking (should you choose any of the optional excursions involving lots of walking).

The restaurants on Southside (the area south of campus where Unit 2 is located) include a number of casual, budget friendly options. You can find a list of Southside restaurants here: https://www.telegraphberkeley.org/dine/

Downtown Berkeley, which is within walking distance of Unit 2, also has a number of restaurants ranging from casual to semi-formal. You can find a list of Downtown Berkeley restaurants here: https://sf.eater.com/maps/best-restaurants-bars-cafes-downtown-berkeley

UC Berkeley is located in an urban environment. For your safety, we recommend walking in groups at night.

The closest hospital is Alta Bates at 2001 Dwight Way. The Alta Bates Hospital phone number is 510-204-4444.

Meeting participants are not required to show proof of vaccination or wear a mask to participate in the conference or to access any of the buildings at UC Berkeley. We do, however, encourage participants to maintain risk mitigation strategies in the interests of public health.

As noted in the registration notes, all meals are covered save dinner on Wednesday, June 12. Participants electing to do the food tour excursion should budget approximately $25.

FAQs

Meeting participants have two options for lodging during the APARRI meeting: UC Berkeley dorm housing or the Bancroft Hotel. Please reserve early, as space is limited. You must register for housing as a separate step from registering for the conference.

UC Berkeley Dorm Housing: We encourage all out-of-town APARRI participants to stay at the Towle Mini-Suites, which is a 10-minute walk (for most guests) to our meeting location at the Faculty Club. Each mini-suite consists of two spacious bedrooms, either two double-occupancy rooms or one double- and one single-occupancy room, plus its own bathroom with shower. Each mini-suite is single gender. Towle was recently renovated and features contemporary architecture with polished concrete, glass, and abundant natural light. Single rooms are $XX/night and double-occupancy rooms are $XX/night. APARRI participants who select dorm housing must commit to lodging for all three nights (check-in: June 20, checkout: June 23).

The deadline for dorm housing is May 15, 2023.

Bancroft Hotel: The Bancroft Hotel is a 5-minute walk away (for most guests) from the Faculty Club. We’ve reserved a limited number of rooms from June 20-23 at a special rate of $149 plus tax/night. Room rates include breakfast at the hotel. Guests who select this option should make their own arrangements with the Bancroft Hotel directly and type in the code “APARRI/BCSR” for  the special rate.

Thanks to the generous support of the Henry Luce Foundation and UC Berkeley, APARRI will be offering a limited number of scholarships for 3 nights lodging in a shared dorm room, double-occupancy, and domestic plane travel, with priority given to graduate students who present at the conference. We anticipate being able to fund more than students, though encourage anyone with institutional support to access those resources first.

  • APARRI will support travel to the conference by reimbursing up to $550 the cost of a domestic economy plane ticket to the Bay Area that has been purchased at least 21 days in advance. We are not able to reimburse any other travel-related expenses.
  • Scholarship recipients are expected to participate in the full conference.
  • Accepted papers and proposals will be notified by April 21, 2023.
  • If your attendance is contingent on a scholarship, please apply for the scholarship and wait to hear the results before you register for the conference and housing.
  • Applying for a scholarship does not register you for the meeting. Registering for the meeting and housing is a two-step process.
